EMU, Inc. Aviation Museum Statement of Purpose
EMU INC. derives its name from the radio call sign of a unique unit in Army aviation history, the 135th Assault Helicopter Company. The 135th was a typical Vietnam era Assault Helicopter Company with the major exception that it was composed of both U.S. Army and Royal Australian Navy personnel. Because of this unique composition, the 135th was considered an Experimental Military Unit, hence its call sign E.M.U. or EMU. EMU INC. is a non-profit corporation formed for the following purposes:
EMU, Inc. is dedicated to preserving and bringing to life the legacy of United States military aviation through the operation and stewardship of EMU 309, a historic, combat-flown Vietnam War-era UH-1 “Huey” helicopter.
Through immersive, living-history experiences, we educate the public on the pivotal role of rotary-wing aviation in the Vietnam War, the evolution of military aviation, and the enduring importance of international alliances.
We honor the service and sacrifice of those who flew, maintained, and depended on the Huey in combat, ensuring their stories are preserved for future generations. At the same time, we serve our nation’s veterans by fostering connection, camaraderie, and healing, particularly for those affected by PTSD and other invisible wounds of war, through meaningful engagement with this iconic aircraft.
By uniting education, preservation, and veteran outreach, EMU, Inc. transforms history into a living experience that inspires, informs, and honors.
